Contemporary Insights: Music and Conversation

Each Contemporary Insights event focuses on a single piece from the following Monday’s subscription concert.  Composers and musicians talk about the piece, and the musicians demonstrate parts of it.  After performing the work in its entirety, the musicians will elicit reactions, answer questions, and dialog with the audience.

Share wine and hors d’oeuvres afterwards.

ODC Dance Commons, San Francisco

Program: Alessandro Solbiati, Sestetto à Gérard for flute/piccolo/bass flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, piano, violin, viola and cello

Composer Alessandro Solbiati joins David Milnes and the ensemble to discuss his piece, which is scored for the same instruments as Gérard Grisey’s Vortex temporum and is dedicated to him. Solbiati’s piece uses modified tunings and mutes, alternating between sounds that are “dark and deformed” and those that are “sparkling and crystal clear” to create a complex narrative.
