William Winant, percussion
is internationally recognized as one of the leading avant-garde percussionists working today. He has collaborated with such diverse artists as the Kronos String Quartet, Yo-Yo Ma and the Mark Morris Dance Group, Steve Reich and Musicians, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Lou Harrison, John Zorn, and Sonic Youth. He has been the percussionist with the avant rock band, Mr. Bungle, and has commissioned and premiered many pieces written for him and his own ensemble, the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio. He is also principal percussionist with the Merce Cunningham Dance company. A member of the instrumental faculty at the University of California at Berkeley and Mills College, and a Visiting Lecturer at University of California, Santa Cruz, Mr. Winant has made over two hundred recordings covering a wide variety of music. His recording of Lou Harrison's "La Koro Sutro" was the New York Times Critic's Choice for best contemporary recording of 1988. He has been a member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players since 1988.
